You can experience the flight of starlings, known as “Black Sun”, in the spring (ca. 20th March until 25th April) and in the autumn (ca. 15th September until 20th October).
The starlings gather at dusk – roughly an hour before sunset – before settling for the night in the thickets of reeds in the marshes. It is almost impossible to say when and where you can watch the starlings, as they frequently change abode. The best chances of seeing Black Sun are at the embankment of Rømø, in the thickets of reeds at the lake, Rudbøl sø, and at the border village, Møllehus Grænse/Aventoft. Remember to bring your passport along, as the starlings often choose to settle south of the border.
When you are in luck, and the starlings come to the place, where you are waiting, you will see large flocks of starlings arriving from all four corners of the earth within barely 35 minutes. Most often, the flocks gather in one gigantic flock, which flies back and forth across the thicket of reeds, and when it is almost dark, settles amongst the tall reeds - it seems as if the flock is sucked down, and the Black Sun ballet is suddenly over.

We hope, you enjoy your experiences of the splendid natural phenomenon in our region, and kindly request you to abide by the following directions: - So as not to scare the starlings away, you are kindly requested not to stand on top of the dike. Instead, bring a cushion, or blanket, along to sit on, and settle yourselves on the side of the dike. Kindly seat yourselves on the same side of the reeds, as the other visitors. If there are people on all sides of the reeds, the birds are afraid to come down, and they fly elsewhere.

Why in the Tønder marshes? The before bedtime ballet can be seen elsewhere in the country, but the largest flocks of birds reside in the marshes of Tønder. During the day, the birds especially search for fodder in the outermost polders of the Tønder marshes, and at night they seek rest in the reeds.

If there are people present on all sides of the reeds, the birds are afraid to come down, and they fly elsewhere. - Please do not use blitz, when you take pictures, as this frightens the starlings, so they fly elsewhere (besides, a blitz is of no use due to the great distances). - Do not bring dogs along. - Park your car, so you do not create havoc for the neighbours. Remember that ambulances etc. must also be able to pass.
