DRAVED SKOV

Nature lovers will be attracted by the Draved Skov (the forest) and Kongens Mose (the moor), huge areas covered by the original South Jutland forest vegetation. The area is altogether 500 hectares, and constitutes the largest forest in Denmark left untouched for centuries. In connection with Draved Skov, you come upon relics of the past, such as Retterstedet (the place of execution) and Krigsfangegravene (the holes for prisoners of war).
You just follow the paths along Brede Å. The stream has been restored to its original meandering through the beautiful scenery. Some places the stream has been dammed up with granite boulders, so it roars as it races along like a river. Moreover, Brede Å is among the 10 best places, when it comes to fishing waters, and it is a popular area for anglers.

In 1173 the Cistercian monks established the monastery by the stream, Brede Å, and in the course of the Middle Ages the town evolved around the monastery and the church.

LØGUMKLOSTER CHURCH

Løgumkloster kirke (the church) was built over the century 1225-1325. Today, only 2 of the 4 original wings remain: the East Wing (the chapter hall and dormitory) and the North Wing (the church). The monastery was closed down in 1548.

It is a very special feeling to go shopping in the old town of the monks. You can enjoy the natural kindness and jolliness of the South Jutlanders, especially if you visit the traditional fairs, such as the horse fair or the Kloster Mærken.
Løgumkloster by (the town Løgumkloster) has the milieu of an old town with small, low houses and red tiled roofs (many originating from the 18th and 19th centuries). During the day, you can experience the lovely melodies from Kong Fr. IX’s Klokkespil, a 25 m high tower with the largest carillon in Northern Europe – altogether 49 bells. In addition to the automatic carillon, concerts with glockenspiel are arranged.

On top of Løgumbjerge (the mountains) there is a group of 10 burial mounds. Vongshøj is the highest, and has a 5 m tower at the top. From the top, 67 m above the sea, and you can enjoy a magnificent view of the landscape. So if you enjoy both nature and the history of civilisations – then Løgumkloster is surely the place to visit.
