Thrills for your eyes and your soul – sensing
When the children have finally moved away from home, you no longer need to take school holidays into consideration, but can have your vacation when you please. So why not take a couple of days off, perhaps even several times during a year. In South West Jutland you can delight your eyes and your soul through out the year.

In itself a holiday is wonderful, and many of us wish to combine laziness with some serious input. In these parts you will find museums, art, canoeing, hitch-hiking, the Black Sun, Castle Safari and oyster fishing.

On Rømø, you can visit the Kommandørgård belonging to the National Museum. It brings you back to the times, when whaling brought wealth to Rømø during the period 1700-1800. If you continue across the embankment to Ballum and the marshlands, you will find the watering mills, from 1842, which were used for watering the livestock in the marshes.

In Skærbæk, you will find Hjemsted Oldtidspark with a town from the Iron Age. The park was the first park in Denmark, where history comes alive with exciting events such as a Roman Festival and fairs from Ancient Times and the Middle Ages. Skærbæk Museum, which is arranged in a former merchant’s house dating from 1909, illustrates the history of this part of the country, and also contains a lovely permanent exhibition of wall carpets from Skærbæk.

If you go exploring in the forest, Lindet Skov, you will come upon relics from ancient times, such as burial mounds, a long barrow and a passage grave. Other areas of natural beauty are the plantations Hønning- and Renbæk, as well as the moor Hønning Mose. You should also pay a visit to Helm Polde, a landscape in the sand dunes created by the shifting sand. The forest, Hjartbro Skov, is a varied and interesting forest situated on a hill island where parts of the oak woods have been declared areas of outstanding natural beauty. The forest, Mandbjerg Skov, is also worth visiting. It is situated just a few kilometres south of Toftlund.

In Visby by Bredebro you find Visby Park. The park is open through out the year. There are tables and benches so you can bring along your picnic. This is where the clergyman, who wore ladies’ clothes, resided. On a hill in the garden, he installed 3 handsome figures named Flora, Kilde Nymfen and Psyke.

In Højer, there is a Dutch mill from 1857. It is the highest wooden windmill in North Europe and measures 22 m which cover 2 stories. It contains an interesting museum of mills and marshes. South of Højer is the tiny town Rudbøl, which still has ducal borough rights from 1629. The lake Rudbølsø and the polder Magisterkogen create a paradise for nature lovers and painters. Rudbøl is also renowned for its stork’s nest which has been in use for nearly a 100 years.

Tønder Museum was established in 1923. The main focus in the collection was, and still is, the art from South Schleswig – industrial products and silverware produced by the local silver smiths, who had their peak period in Tønder during 1750-1825. The lace displays, Tønder Kniplingerne, is another central feature, which reveals the rich tradition for lace work in Schleswig. In connection with the museums you will find Tønder’s old water tower from 1902. It was reconstructed in 1995 and now it creates a fantastic setting for the exhibit of chairs from the hands of the internationally well-known furniture designer Hans J Wegner. Half way down the pedestrian street in Tønder town you come to Drøhses Hus. The building is one of the most handsome of the town houses and was built in the 17th century.

Emil Nolde Museum in Seebüll used to be the home of Nolde. The artist himself designed it in 1927. It has regular and straight lines, and is typical of the functionalism of the twenties.
